Some Silly Things

Posted by

Some days the universe is silly.

On the opening day of the Farmer’s Market, we bought a loaf of bread from a bakery that is there most of the time. They make the best dark chocolate brownies with a little salt on top of them but that’s not why we are here. We made French Toast with the bread to have with some bacon we got from the market. Bourbon maple bacon to be precise but, again, that’s not why we are here.

Had a little left over but not enough for another full night of French Toast so my wife says we should make croutons because we’ve got two nights of salad ahead of us. I filed that away and went into work this morning. Won’t talk about that much. Let’s just say that when people make decisions without really thinking them through, there are often consequences.

So I got home and figured, well, I’ve got some time so let’s see about those croutons. Not something I’ve done before but its really just cutting the bread into cubes, tossing with some olive oil, adding a bit of Italian seasoning and then baking for a bit at around 350. Oh and maybe tossing a little melted butter into things as well because everything is better with butter. Since the bread wasn’t totally stale, I just left them in a warm oven for a bit longer to dry out and get nice and crunchy. Easy peasy. Yet even though it is a small thing, it is nice when you try something new and it works out well.

By now you are probably asking what is so silly about croutons? I may have mentioned this before but, in our Christmas gift exchange, I got a calendar listing all the “days” for a given day. I was using it to add a little fun into my team’s day with What Day is it Wednesday. Naturally, that stopped when we were no longer working but I certainly kept the Calendar.

And, there at number 2 on the list, was Crouton Day. I have no idea who creates these days or who they have to talk to get it included on a calendar like this. But I guess the Crouton lobby is strong so we do have a day dedicated to a salad topping.

Here’s the link if you don’t believe me. You really can’t make this stuff up.

Just for fun, I took a picture of the end product and posted it on Facebook and Instagram. I mean if you are going to celebrate a holiday, you might as well go all out. What are the odds of me making croutons for the first time on National Crouton Day. Maybe the spirit of the holiday moved me.

Anyway, they were nice and crunchy and the Italian seasoning worked well with the Olive Oil. They complemented the salad nicely. Happy Crouton Day everyone!!
