No, not mine.
I got a message from the Work Daughter the other day asking for my address because she might have lost it and she wanted to send me a card. These kids today can’t keep track of anything. In my day, we had address books and wrote that stuff down and … Sorry, just channeling a random mad old dude.
I realize I may not have put the Work Daughter into the cast of characters so let me explain. No, there is too much, let me sum up. Many, many years ago, we had connected with a local High School to offer unpaid opportunities for talented students to get some work experience. I picked her the position because she was adorably awkward talking with me. Figured it would just be for a semester but we are still in contact after 8 (or is it 9 years).
You see, I can’t really consider myself a mentor type since I think I’m still emotionally only 18. Well, that might not be right but I’ve never really felt like I’ve grown up and why would anyone want to take life advice from me. Turns out that she did and it has been an interesting experience. I believe I mentioned that she got engaged. If not, now you know.
So, I was kind of suspecting something was up even when I got the card from her. On the return address, she had just used her fiance’s last name. (Isn’t that kind of adorable?). So I sent her a message asking if I had missed some big announcement and she assured me that I hadn’t. A couple of days ago, I got another letter from her with the “Save the Date” announcement.
She no longer lives in our town so I’ll have to figure out how to get there but it is not until late summer so I have time. I did message her after I got the card and she said it would mean a lot for her if I could attend. Knowing that she kind of has a habit of understating things, I suspect it is really important so I will have to figure out a way to get there.
There is some deeper meaning here but I may not be able to express it. Words and actions can have powers that you never expect. As you go through life, you will run across many people and sometimes, just the right words can have a big and positive impact on someone’s life. Just another reason to chose words carefully and try to be uplifting and positive when you can. Better to build people up than tear them down.
I never would have guessed that this was the path we would walk down after that first meeting. But she’s been a very positive part of my life and I’m glad that the fates or powers that be decided that we should intersect at that moment.
That’s a great story. It made me smile, because you are obviously an important part of her life😊
