I’ve written many times about how much I love summer and how much I hate to see it go. But I have a little confession to make. I don’t have much use for really hot days after Labor Day. You would think I want to hold on to summer as long as possible but it kind of like peeling off a bandage slowly. You just prolong the inevitable and it hurts more.
It is probably just a function of having grown up with the four distinct seasons and something about Labor Day and the start of football that kind of puts me in a different mind set. Not saying I want to jump right into the colder weather but I’m ready to put upper 80’s and 90’s behind me. Would love a nice long stretch of temps in the 70’s where you can still wear shorts but it definitely feels more fall like.
It does seem like the last couple of Septembers have just been mostly hot and dry. Maybe that is a new weather pattern. All it does seem to do though is just dry up the leaves so you get a lot going from green to brown and falling off the trees without really changing colors. I mean it is the one thing about fall you are supposed to enjoy so the extra hot and dry weather kind of cheats you out of that.
Plus there are a lot of little festivals and things to do in the fall. We went to one on Saturday and the weather was just perfect (it isn’t always hot and dry). Got another one to go to this weekend but the temperatures are going to creep up so it may not be as nice.
Maybe it is just a little selfish because it always feels better wasting a Sunday watching football when the weather isn’t so great. I see the sun and it just feels like I should be outside doing something else. I know that time will come soon enough though. It just feels a little wrong to be watching football if the temperatures are in the mid to upper 80’s outside.
There is a good thing about warmer weather at this time of year. The amount of daylight is much less than mid summer so it limits how much heating can happen. There are days in summer when you wake up and it just feels hot and muggy and you know it is going to be an uncomfortable day. Here, the mornings tend to be cooler and more pleasant. We went for a walk last night about an hour before sunset and it was mostly in shaded areas and it was super nice.
The current 10 day forecast calls for several days of mid to upper 80’s with no rain in sight. Guess I’m not going to complain that much but it really wouldn’t upset me if the projected highs were 5 to 10 degrees lower.
