We have held firm that the cat does not sleep with us at night. Its an allergy thing. It means he gets put away at night but that also means we have to get him into that room at night. Most nights it isn’t a problem. Last night, he tried a new technique. Didn’t work in the end so we’ll see if we get a repeat performance tonight.
Our normal nightly routine is that he gets some time to sit with me and take his pre-bedtime nap. Yes, I’m pretty much his favorite. My wife can be sitting in the chair next to me and he’ll be sleeping on the couch but if come in and sit down, he usually ends up jumping up to sit with me.
When its time for bed, I put him down and the fun begins. I’ve tried just holding on to him but it doesn’t work so well. There are days where he’ll just sit and let me pick him up and carry him downstairs. There are other days where he starts to go downstairs and we’re able to trap him between us and then I can collect him and put him away.
He started this tactic of randomly leaving before I could put him down and then heading downstairs and hiding under the couch. Once he’s there, we aren’t getting him out. So we just turned out the lights downstairs and, until last night, he’d show back up in about 10 minutes or so and then I could pick him up and take him back to bed.
Last night, he just decided to stay under the couch. So we just went to bed and left him out. About forty minutes later, I feel him jump up on the bed and start to make his way to what he thought was going to be his sleeping spot for the night. Probably figured he had outsmarted us but he didn’t count on me being a light sleeper.
I know he would prefer to be with us. But he could also be a total jerk about being shut away and spent the night complaining about it which he doesn’t do. He does start meowing sometimes when he hears me up and around in the morning but that’s really all the complaining we get. Then he’s always so happy to see me so he doesn’t act all mad or hurt about being kept away from us at night.
We’ll see what happens tonight. His grand plan for getting to sleep with us failed but he did get closer than before. Not sure what the cat brain is going to make of this but tonight could be interesting.
