Waiting on the Snow

I just posted about the daffodils starting to come up with the disclaimer that it was far too early to start seriously thinking about spring. Yesterday, a “winter weather advisory” popped up and we are supposed to pick up some quantity of snow through this afternoon.

One of my weather apps is suggesting we’ll get 3.14 inches of snow when all is said and done. Not a big amount although it would be the greatest amount of snow we’ve received in a single storm this winter. Right now, it is just cloudy with no flakes in sight although the weather app says it will be here in less than two hours.

The funny thing is they haven’t sent out the salt trucks which is usually something done the night before a storm is supposed to arrive. Given that the snowfall is going to coincide with the evening rush, it seems like putting some salt down now might not be a bad idea. I suppose there is some reason – maybe it is going to come down too fast for the snow to work. Or maybe the city just doesn’t believe the forecast. Guess we’ll find out.

The good news is I don’t need to be anywhere today. Days like this are why I’m glad I no longer work. Again, this isn’t a big snowfall but it doesn’t take much to turn the roads into a zoo. We get enough snow here that you’d think people would remember how to drive in it but I guess that short term memory gets wiped out. There are always those who are afraid to be on the road driving far slower than conditions require and those who just seem to ignore the snow and try to drive as fast as possible. Never a good combination.

The downside is we do our shopping on Saturdays. This might be enough snow to trigger the crew I’ve hired to clear the driveway but it also isn’t clear when they’d show up. Depends on when the snow stops and how many others are ahead of me in the queue. So I might wake up tomorrow having to shovel the driveway so we can get out or I might not.

But we’ll worry about that tomorrow. If it does snow, then it will at least be nice to be inside watching it. Watching falling snow when you don’t have to be out in it is peaceful. Picking up a shovel is not.
