Down with the Decorations

Today was the day that all the Christmas stuff had to be taken down and put away. There is a much different vibe taking the tree down than putting it up. For us, it is a joint effort to put up the tree with Christmas music playing and all the fun of the season yet to come. Taking it down is mostly a solo effort for me and we’ve already done all the Christmas things so there isn’t much to look forward to.

But it isn’t just the tree because we have assorted Christmas decorations in several rooms. Most of them were gifts or things we bought at certain points in our life so there are memories attached to many of them. Plus, it is just makes things far more festive to have all the mantles covered with stuff. And all the outdoor lights had to be taken off the bushes and put away.

The good news is that, according to the Fitbit, I got a significant number of Active Zone Minutes. All of the decorations get stored in the bonus room over the garage. Its a relatively short flight of stairs but when you climb it multiple times, it adds up.

The cat kind of freaked out while it was happening. Too much random activity. So he went and hid in the bonus room for a bit. The tree turned into one of his favorite spots and now it is gone.

So now we are in a new year. I’ve talked about goals and resolutions before so I won’t go into that again. I will say I’ve always found the “Happy New Year” thing to be a bit strange. I suppose it is a nice thought but we aren’t talking about a day, we are talking about a whole year. Who goes a whole year with nothing but happy things?

Or does “happy” just mean “happy the majority of time”. Or is it that there aren’t any major downs during the year. Besides you need to wait for the entire year to know if it was a “happy” year. And then it isn’t a new year anymore and people start the whole “happy new year” cycle all over again. Merry Christmas I get. But Happy New Year? Guess Happy New Year’s Day wouldn’t work because then you’d feel cheated with someone only wishing you happiness for a single day. Oh well, I guess we need to say something to mark the changing of the calendars.
