So I had to take the cat to the vet yesterday. As I’ve said before, we’ve always had dogs and it was certainly a different experience taking a cat to the vet. Our dogs didn’t really like going but it was easier to deal with a dog on a leash. Had no issue with letting them wander around the exam room because of the leash. They were generally mellow and accepted whatever the vets wanted to do to them. Plus, they were always happy to leave and get home.
Now, things started out OK because the cat likes attention. Plus they had these little food tubes which I’m guessing were designed to distract the cat from the poking and prodding. Our guy loves his food so he scarfed one down while the tech was doing his exam and then another when the vet was looking him over.
Because he’s lived outdoors, the vet warned us to expect certain things like ear mites which wasn’t a shock since the cat likes to scratch one of the ears. He wasn’t particularly fond of the ear exam though.
Then they took him back so they could draw blood for other tests, give him the required vaccines and clean out those ears. When they brought him back, he was about at his limit. The vet tech tried to give him ear drops and the first one was fine but then the cat decided that he was done with the whole vet thing so they decided it was best to call it a day.
When we got home, he ate because the stuff at the vet didn’t count. But then he went downstairs to a room that was about as far away from us as possible and took a long nap. It was like he needed some alone time and found a room that was far away from any distractions. Right before bed, he did come upstairs to sit in my lap for a bit.
Today he’s back to normal. We did manage to get the ear drops in and then we got results from the vet and it turns out he’s got another parasite (not unexpected given his outdoor life). So we got some antibiotics for that which is just a powder we can mix into his food.
All in all, he was pretty healthy for an outdoor cat. We do have to go back in four weeks for boosters on the vaccines. Hopefully, it won’t be as stressful.
And out of nowhere, we’ve got another blast of fall/summer weather. Two days of patchy frost now followed by five days with temps in the 70s. Then, fall takes over again. We have plans to go to an outdoor halloween thing on Friday and it will not feel like Halloween. But I’m glad we didn’t have weather like this when we were getting pumpkins on Saturday.
