A Few Tuesday Tidbits

Fall certainly brings out these type of life analogies. You see lots of things about change and letting things go and on and on. If you were going to be honest, this quote would have added “then we go through a cold, dark period” before the cheery “we bloom again”. Guess that wouldn’t have been as effective but it shows the limitations of using nature analogies.

We are still in fall-summer. Things look like fall. Leaves changing and falling, flowers clearly looking like their best days are behind them, squirrel carrying and burying nuts and so on. But the weather is still more summer than fall although the temperatures are really just seasonally average.

Now, fall-summer is still a lot different from summer. The first thing is the amount of daylight. We passed the equinox so darkness exceed daylight from now until March. So there is less time for the heat to build up and it dissipates rather quickly overnight. Makes the mornings cool and comfortable. The humidity seems less so even the heat doesn’t feel as hot as it does in summer.

The turtles are enjoying the last bit of warmth. There have been several floating in the weeds when we’ve taken our walks. Not sure when they officially give up and go to the bottom of the pond for the winter but I suspect it won’t be long. It has been a couple of days since we’ve seen a hummingbird and there are just a few lone vultures around – not the flocks that we see in summer. So, despite the temperatures still being warm, nature is showing that colder weather is on the way.

I do love summer for many reasons. I guess part of it is that I kind of associate summer with freedom. Some of that is from childhood when you didn’t have to go to school. And there is something nice about not having to worry about how many layers you need to go outside. But I do realize you can’t hold on forever and there is something about that first cold snap of the year. Oh, it clearly loses its appeal to me as it gets colder and colder but the first one is still special. Like the first snowfall.

Oh and I’ve been waiting for cooler weather to move some of the patio furniture back onto the decks since the staining is done. Don’t really feel like carrying those things up the few stairs when the temps are still warm. At this point, I may just suggest that we leave them in the garage since they really serve no purpose being outside during the winter and all the snow and rain just gets them dirty.

Well that’s really all I’ve got for now.

I did like this end quote. I might argue a bit since some leaves are far from ordinary. But I like the sentiment. (I don’t know if love is the right word but I do notice the leaves on our walks)
