So it appears that we have once again entered the Pumpkin Spice portion of the year. The day so many women look forward to when the PSL returns for another limited engagement and food marketers everywhere toss pumpkin spice flavors into whatever they can think of. Which just makes me think of a line in Jurassic Park which I’ll just paraphrase “You were so busy thinking of what you could put Pumpkin Spice in that you didn’t stop to think whether you should use the Pumpkin Spice.”
I wonder what team at Starbucks dreamed this up in the first place. Shouldn’t they be household names by now? The founders of Pumpkin Spice. Probably should have a statue outside each and every Starbucks so the hoards of Pumpkin Spice lovers can offer tribute before ordering their first PSL of the year.
On a side note, it has been so long since we’ve been to a Starbucks that I had to reactivate the app so I can use the card I’ve saved there. Still has a big amount from the last autoload which should get us through the fall and into the special winter drinks. (Yes, my wife is part of the PSL cult)
I’ve done my rants on Pumpkin Spice before so I won’t repeat myself. Although the whole venti latte thing is really part of what is wrong here. If you want coffee, just have coffee with maybe a little milk or cream like the cold brew I’ve got in front of me. (Purchased from our local coffee shop and not Starbucks) The venti has 20 ounces of liquid. How much of that is actually coffee? Maybe a tenth or slightly more? At that point, are you really drinking coffee? Would you miss the coffee is it wasn’t there?
Yeah it puts me in my grumpy old man mood.
If Pumpkin Spice was so popular, why is it limited to one type of pie that most people only eat on Thanksgiving. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind a slice of Pumpkin pie but in the universe of deserts, it isn’t going to rank that high. Once a year is sufficient for me. So why the hype for a bunch of spices that can’t really cut it the rest of the year? And, if I’m going to be honest, I usually went for the Pecan Pie at Thanksgiving since we typically had those two as options.
Well Pumpkin Spice, you’ve got a little less than three months to be the star before the Christmas themed items show up and you get pushed to the clearance shelves. Really, the bloom is off the Pumpkin long before that though. Which is the problem when something gets pushed too far forward. It isn’t even real fall here and everyone will be tired of the whole PSL thing by the time we get into actual fall.
