So we heard about this festival in a town just a bit away from us and, just to do something completely different, we headed up there yesterday afternoon. Turns out that the festival was not exactly as advertised. It was in a nice little park so we got to walk around for a bit and see a few things but not really something worth driving up for.
It was nice to do something different though. You don’t have to get too far out of our town before you are in the land of corn and beans. Nothing says summer road trip like hazy skies and corn as far as the eye can see. Much better than seeing the remnants of the crop during winter.
There were a grand total of two food trucks and a snack bar so we decided to opt for a real restaurant as there were several within easy walking distance. I will say there was something nice about a city this size. It was small enough that getting in and around downtown and finding parking was no problem. But it was large enough to have a fairly nice selection of restaurants.
Didn’t really count on a Friday night crowd and our first option only had outdoor seating which we ruled out because the seats were in the sun and it was hot. Settled on a brew pub place that did have tables available.
Not sure where we are in the arc of the microbrewery lifespan but they still seem to be a popular option. Kind of “everything old is new again” since before mass production and transportation you likely had breweries in every city. My wife isn’t a drinker and I rarely do and it wasn’t an option since we still had a long drive back. The servers in places like this all seem a bit disappointed when you order iced tea.
My wife ended up ordering a curry chicken salad and our server said that was one of her favorites. Then I ordered something called a five beer burger and she said that was one of her favorites as well. Really? Have to admit I was a bit skeptical. I mean the curry chicken did sound good but the two dishes appeared to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. Could they really be among her favorites?
In case you were curious, the five beer burger had beer cheese, a beer mustard, onions sauteed in beer and a couple of other things related to beer. Not bad. The beer cheese was nice but a little salty – probably designed to sell more beer.
Just a nice little diversion for a Friday night.
