Was Showcase really just a week ago??
I used a spring quote at the beginning because I liked it. While the calendar says summer won’t start for a few more days, June is summer. Today wasn’t summer. It actually felt more like a fall day but we are way too early for fall/summer. Maybe it is just a late summer/spring day.
Yesterday, we came close to 90 and it was sunny all day. We decided to try and get some replacement annuals because some of the ones we planted didn’t make it. For some, we had hot, dry weather after I planted and they didn’t get enough water. Others were victims of the deer or some other browser that decided flowers would be a good snack.
At this time of year, there are slim pickings in the flower shops. All of the stuff should have been planted by now and what is left is usually scraggly because it has outgrown the little thing it was in. So we bought a few of the nicer looking ones and filled in the gaps. Could just be ringing the dinner bell for the deer. I guess we’ll see.
Had watering scheduled for today and my new smart sprinkler system controller told me it was cancelling it because there was rain in the forecast. I decided I could let a machine make my decisions so I overrode the command and watered this morning anyway. Wasn’t really sure I could trust the weather people since we haven’t seen rain in so long.
Turns out they were right. It started raining about an hour after my watering cycle finished and it basically rained the entire day. Not heavy rain but just constant rain. I don’t think we got above 70 so it was cool, wet and cloudy the entire day. Went out for dinner and almost wanted to change out of shorts but it is June and it would have to be a lot colder for me to do that.
We went for ramen which is normally not something you want in the summer because it is typically hot. Today, it was appropriate. I mean the mid 60’s aren’t really cold and it would be a serious heat wave in December or January. Which is why hot and cold are really relative but it was still a good night for ramen.
Finished another book but I won’t say too much about it. This one was non fiction so not my normal selection. It told the story of things that happened during the summer of 1876. The biggest was Little Big Horn and what I found fascinating is how long it took for that story to get out.
We are so used to instant communication where we can get live information on things happening anywhere in the world. Since that didn’t exist, the news didn’t get out until the soldiers got to a place with a telegraph. Of course, I’m old enough to remember life before the internet but it still interesting to think about the battle being long over before most people heard about it.
Maybe it was better because you wouldn’t have 24 news cycles with endless reporting on the same thing because you need to fill up the time.
Oh well, I now have another book. The latest in one of my mystery series set in London in 1900. It’s light reading but I like it.
The rain is supposed to stop and I’m sure we’ll be back to normal summer soon.
