More Fun with the Fitbit

One of the features you get with the premium package is a readiness score. It may factor in more things but the three things it displays are your recent level of activity, your recent amount of sleep and your heart rate variability. How it combines these three things to make a score is probably locked away somewhere deep within Fitbit headquarters.

But you get a score and a recommended level of activity. And, of course, if you scroll down, they’ll have a bunch of workouts that meet their recommendations. I have another app I’ve been using for my workouts because I can select specific things rather than just launching something and not knowing what is going to come up. Plus, I find that trying to follow something on my phone doesn’t work very well.

And it also gives me another target to shoot for. It is bad enough that I’ve got a step goal. This now gives me an “active minute” goal. Like I need more pressure from this little device. Won’t be a problem today since I’ve got my usual double lesson tonight and that always generates the active minutes.

Then, there is the mindfulness section. The highlight here is something called an EDA scan where you have to sit for three minutes with your fingers on the sides of the device. I find this harder than you would think. It doesn’t help that I typically do this in front of the computer and I’ve got all these things I could get to that are just a click away. Can I really just sit there for three minutes holding on to the sides of my Fitbit?

There’s a number of little exercises you can do as well. Most are longer than the three minutes and require sitting still. I suspect this is probably a good skill to actually acquire – the ability to sit peacefully without needing to DO anything but I’m not there yet. Again, the device wants you to do three days a week of this stuff. I mean you don’t get any penalties for not complying but it just somehow feels like I’m letting it down if I fall short.

I mean I’m already slave to the hourly buzz to get up and move if I haven’t hit the required hourly step count. I suppose it is actually a good thing to move during the day but I’m not sure I should be giving this thing that much power.

So we hit Memorial Day and summer decided it was time to show up. Last couple of days have flirted with 90. I’m kind of dreading the lesson tonight because I’m not sure if OwnerGuy really gets the concept of AC. I get that keeping the place like a meat locker might make the staff grumble a bit but they can always add layers between lessons. πŸ™‚

Or maybe he’s trying to come up with a new thing. I mean there is hot yoga so why not Hot Ballroom?

They have ceiling fans at the studio but they seem to be stuck on ultra low mode. If you stand directly under them, you can occasionally feel a very slight breeze but it fades to nothing very quickly.

Oh well that’s probably enough for today.
